The Vancouver Shipping Industry Luncheon is becoming a regular, anticipated event for the local marine industry. Attendees were welcomed by organizers Haijun Yu and Bernie Jones from Vancouver ShipInvest & Management and reconnected with colleagues and peers after the summer hiatus. The two presentations scheduled for the lunch — Eric Engelbrecht, Wilhelmsen Ships Service North America, and Dave Boldt, Marine Learning Systems — were very well received by guests with a number of questions and discussion continuing on past the presentation. Engelbrecht provided a very succinct overview of scrubbers, including options and trends for ship owners looking to meet IMO 2020 sulphur cap emissions. Boldt spoke to the use of “blended learning” as a way to reduce shipping accidents and incidents. He used examples from existing clients such as Carnival Corp., BC Ferries and Canadian Coast Guard to demonstrate the effectiveness of MLS’ safety training. Stay tuned for notice on the next industry lunch!
